Books, Tech Programs, Pokemon, and more!

As the 2018 Summer comes to an end, it might be time to reflect on how you and your family utilized the public library. Did you check out books, movies, audio books? Did you participate in a summer reading program or celebrate at the Festival of the Book? However you used the library, we know how priceless these resources are. Kristy Amory highlights the ways her family spends their time at the library, and how it is an important part of their daily lives.

"I'm the mother of a five year old and my family just loves the library. It is such a part of our daily lives. My son is a voracious pre-reader and found his love of reading through the library's extensive collection.

My son's recent interest in Pokémon has been fueled through our library system's vast holdings. I am so grateful for the complete series our library offers. He's also devoured the Minecraft series and now we're enjoying many young reader graphic novels. I am so grateful for the system of requesting books to pickup at our Garfield Park branch. We use it every week. I'm also so thankful the library stocks these new and popular titles for kids. There is nothing like total immersion in an interest.

We also enjoy the programs the library offers. My son super enjoys the Lego club at Garfield Park branch, and Steve is an excellent instructor. He is patient and motivating, and the kids are great role models for my son. I love this program, and we look forward to each class. My son also participated in the story time program when he was younger. We loved it and appreciated the gentleness, patience, and inclusion from the engaging instructor, Laura, as well as the intermittent subs like Jasmine. We also enjoyed Jasmine's family craft time at Garfield Park branch, but I'm not sure that program has continued, or maybe we've had a scheduling conflict this year and haven't been able to attend. Since my son is Minecraft-obsessed, we'd love to see a class/club offered at our branch again. We'd also love to see a kids Pokémon or more broadly a game playing time at the library where kids could play card games or board games.

Overall, I love the small town feeling of Garfield Park branch, and it has a great community of kids and adults who frequent that branch. I love interacting with the helpful, kind librarians, like Catherine, who help the place feel like an extension of our home. We've received so much enjoyment and enrichment out of the Garfield Park branch, and we look forward to many more happy years utilizing the resources offered there."
